Twenty-five years ago pediatrician Richard J. Rosenbaum, M.D. created a company aimed at helping newborn babies. He began by enlisting the aid of Darin D. Pratt to help develop home phototherapy lights and eye masks for babies suffering from jaundice. Darin began developing other products as well. He engineered a complete diaper machine that created unique premie diapers. Before his creation, no major manufacturers produced premie diapers, so tiny infants were forced to wear large, enveloping diapers. Darin thought that having a premature baby would be hard enough on parents—they should at least have diapers that fit their child. On his machine, Darin produced small, bright-colored diapers that gained vast appeal. Many parents called and thanked the company, explaining how having “normal-looking” diapers on their infants helped in a very difficult time. The diapers were soon distributed all over the U.S. and sent to a few international locations. On February 15, 2007 Darin Pratt passed away, but his premie diaper idea has lived on. Many large manufacturers now produce preemie-sized diapers, aimed at accomplishing what Darin started. Though Pratt Medical no longer produces premie diapers, Darin’s legacy of concern over newborn health lives on in the production of the phototherapy masks. The masks are specifically designed to be more comfortable than other mask options available, provide better protection from light penetration, and conform better to a baby’s face. We are proud to further Darin’s vision of aiding newborn babies and their families by providing products that do not just function well, but also provide an increased sense of well-being.
